Adaptogens to help stress

An adaptogen is a non-toxic plant that can help the body resist stress. This can be physical, chemical, or biological stress.

Many of these plants have been used as 'Healing plants' in ayurvedic or Chinese medicine for centuries and are now becoming more mainstream.

Research has shown that adaptogens can help reduce tiredness, enhance mental performance, and ease depression and anxiety.

As each adaptogen has different properties, what you take depends on what you would like to achieve. The most commonly used to help combat stress are:

The ashwagandha plant is a small shrub with yellow flowers that’s native to India and North Africa. Extracts or powder from the plant’s root or leaves is used to treat a variety of conditions.

In a 60-day study in 64 people with chronic stress, those in the group that supplemented with ashwagandha reported a 69% reduction in anxiety and insomnia, on average, compared with 11% in the placebo group .

Rhodiola is a herb that grows in the cold, mountainous regions of Europe and Asia. Rhodiola has also been shown to improve symptoms of burnout, which can occur with chronic stress. One study involved 118 people with stress-related burnout who took 400 mg of Rhodiola daily for 12 weeks. Study participants showed clear improvement in various symptoms such as stress and depression commonly associated with burnout.

Turmeric is a common spice that comes from the root of Curcuma longa. It contains a chemical called curcumin and helps the body balance stress hormones and reduces inflammation.

In one study researchers tested the efficacy of curcumin in promoting resilience to chronic social stress in mice. The curcumin administration produced a 4.5-fold increase in stress resilience in the majority of mice.
