Best foods for GI health

It’s easy to ignore our gastrointestinal health unless we have a specific problem. However, healthy digestion is essential to fully absorb nutrients. The danger is that we end up de-energised, under the weather and, at worst, are at risk of developing chronic illness as the digestive systems fail to deliver what is necessary to repair, maintain and uphold our day-to-day health.

Research is highlighting the enormous role our gut plays in our health and well being, not only does it help with digestion but 75% of our body’s immune system reside in the gut. It affects our mental health, weight and cholesterol. So choosing foods that can help our GI health is very important.

High fibre foods

These help with digestion and prevent constipation. Because they keep you full for longer, they also help prevent weight gain. It is recommended that women consume between 21-25 grams per day and for men 30-38 depending on age. A recent study found that fibre is intimately tied with the importance of gut microbes. Fibre feeds and makes these bacteria thrive. The more microbes we have in our intestines, the better the barrier between our body and our busy bacteria population. Foods high in fibre include:

  • Oats, and bran,
  • Whole grains such as whole grain bread, pasta and cereal
  • Beans, dried peas, chickpeas and lentils
  • Fruits – berries are packed with fibre, blueberries, strawberries and raspberries. Apples also have a high amount of fibre
  • Vegetables – kale, broccoli, spinach and Brussel sprouts are all high in fibre

Probiotic and prebiotics

Probiotics contain living organisms and prebiotics contain things to keep these alive so you need to add both to your diet.

Probiotic -Kefir, Kimchi, Yoghurt and Sauerkraut

Prebiotic- Asparagus, banana, garlic, onion and oats

Drink plenty of fluids

Drinking at least 2 litres of fluid a day is great for digestive health. Fluid helps to swell fibre so makes you feel full for longer. It's also essential for breaking down foods and helping us absorb the nutrients.
