Four tips top prevent coughs and colds

A cold is a mild viral infection, it can cause a blocked nose, a runny nose, sneezing, a sore throat and a cough. Usually, it gets better by itself without the need for treatment. However, there are some things you can do to reduce the chance of catching one.

1.Eat green vegetables

Green, leafy vegetables are rich in vitamins and nutrients that help to support a healthy immune system.

They provide anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, as well as key nutrients that aid in the function of your immune system.

Try: A green smoothie - add one sachet of Britt’s Superfoods wheatgrass juice to a handful of spinach, a cup of organic apple juice and a splash of lemon. It'll keep you full and give you some energy.

2.Get enough sleep

The link between the common cold and lack of sleep can be found in the immune system. When a healthy person is well-rested, their immune system is able to fight off diseases like colds and flus more effectively than if they were sleep-deprived.

study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine showed that healthy adult participants who slept a minimum of eight hours each night over a two-week period showed a greater resistance to the virus.

Try: Getting into a regular sleep routine to ensure that you easily slip into slumber to ensure you get a consistent good nights sleep.

3.Wash your hands

Limiting your exposure to illness by avoiding germs is key to remaining healthy. Wash your hands for 20 seconds before preparing foods and when you enter the house.

Ensure not to sneeze or cough into your hands but into your elbow or a tissue. If you do make sure you wash your hands afterwards. This will also help to prevent the spread of germs.

4.Stay hydrated

Drinking water and staying hydrated this cold and flu season could help prevent you from getting a cold.

Staying hydrated helps keep the mucus membranes of your nasal passages moist so they can catch viruses before entering your body. At the same time, it can help your sinuses drain by keeping the mucus thinner.

Water also oxygenates the blood, helping to flush out harmful toxins from your immune system.

Try: Adding a superfood juice to your favourite juice, not only will you be hydrating but you will also be adding extra nutrients to support your body.
