Healthy ice creams, lollies and sorbets to beat the heat

As the weather warms there's nothing quite like a refreshing frozen treat to beat the summer heat. Ice cream, lollies, and sorbets are beloved desserts enjoyed by people of all ages. While traditionally viewed as indulgent and high in sugar, there are now healthier alternatives available that offer a guilt-free way to enjoy these frozen delights. We take a look at a few, with some tested recipes.

Lower Calorie Content:

Looking for a healthier alternative to traditional high-calorie ice cream? Look no further! Healthy alternatives to ice cream are now available, utilising ingredients such as low-fat milk, natural sweeteners, and fruit purees. By incorporating these ingredients, the calorie content is significantly reduced, making them an excellent choice for individuals who are conscious of their weight or striving to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

When seeking a sweet and refreshing dessert without added sugars and artificial flavours, fruit-based ice creams are a fantastic option. You can easily create these delectable treats using fruits like bananas, strawberries, or mangos. Simply process or puree the fruit in a blender or food processor until it reaches a creamy and smooth consistency. For a creamier texture or a touch of added sweetness, you can include milk, yogurt, honey, or maple syrup and allow the mixture to freeze. The resulting ice cream is not only delicious but also highly nutritious, packed with fibre, vitamins, and antioxidants.

You will need:

🌱Half a fresh pineapple cut into chunks
🌱2 bananas frozen
🌱2 Britt's Superfoods Wheatgrass juice sachets

Add all the ingredients to a blender to achieve a creamy consistency and enjoy, if not quite cool enough you can add the mix back to the freezer but the frozen banana should keep it cold enough.

Nutrient-Rich Ingredients:

Many healthy frozen treats incorporate nutrient-rich ingredients such as fruits, nuts, and seeds. These additions boost the nutritional value by providing essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. For example, fruit-based sorbets offer a natural dose of vitamins C and A, while nut-infused ice creams provide healthy fats, protein, and fibre.

 Try:

Rhubarb, gooseberry and Elixir sorbet

🌱3 stalks of pink rhubarb
🌱2 handfuls of ripe gooseberries

Dairy and Lactose-Free Options:

Traditional ice cream can be problematic for individuals with lactose intolerance or dairy allergies. However, the availability of dairy-free and vegan alternatives, featuring plant-based milks like almond, coconut, or soy, has expanded significantly. These alternatives offer a solution that allows everyone to indulge in a frozen treat without compromising their dietary preferences or restrictions.

If you're a vegan or lactose intolerant and seeking alternative options, coconut milk provides numerous benefits. With its creamy texture and richness in healthy fats, coconut milk serves as an excellent base for making dairy-free ice cream. You can customize your creation by combining it with your choice of nuts or fruits, resulting in a delicious and nutritious treat. For an extra burst of flavor, consider incorporating cocoa powder or vanilla essence to elevate the taste profile. With these alternatives, you can enjoy a satisfying and healthy frozen dessert that caters to your specific needs.
