Naturally soothe psoriasis

More than 125 million people around the world suffer from psoriasis and with World Psoriasis Day just around the corner we take a look at some important information that can help ease the pain of those living with the challenges of this disease.

It is thought that Psoriasis results from an overactive immune system that causes flaky, irritable patches of skin which can form scale like areas.

The immune system is your body's defence against disease and infection, but it attacks healthy skin cells by mistake in people with psoriasis..

As well as the physical symptoms of this disease, the mental health effects are slowly being recognised. It is thought that about 48% of people with psoriatic disease have anxiety disorders.

Many people's psoriasis symptoms start or become worse because of a certain event, known as a trigger.

These triggers include infections, injury to the skin, stress, Vitamin D deficiency, and heavy alcohol consumption. Psoriasis can also be triggered by certain medications.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for psoriasis but it can go into remission, here are some natural ways to ease the symptoms.

1. Get some Sun

Sunlight can sometimes improve the appearance of the skin when a person has psoriasis. People should expose their skin gradually and for brief periods.

The sun’s UVB rays are beneficial for psoriasis symptoms as they can slow the growth of affected skin cells. However, we all know that the suns rays can be damaging so it’s essential to use sunscreen.

2. Add Turmeric

Research has shown that turmeric can significantly reduce symptoms of those suffering from psoriasis.

Its antioxidant anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anti-carcinogenic properties may decrease the oxidative stress related to skin lesions.

It also appears to inhibit the production of substances known as cytokines, that can lead to inflammation.

An easy way to add turmeric to your diet is with our Apple, Ginger &Turmeric juice.

3. Have a bath

Dead Sea or Epsom salts in warm water can help to soothe the skin. Soak for about 15 minutes, and use a moisturiser when you're done to seal in the water.

Some people find adding oats to the bath soothing and beneficial.

4. Keep a healthy weight

Studies have shown that obesity increases a person’s risk of having psoriasis. Losing a few pounds can not only improve symptoms but also make treatment more effective.

5. Reduce Stress

It has been shown that stress is a known trigger for  psoriasis flare ups. Finding ways to reduce and manage your stress can potentially prevent flares or lessen their severity.

Find what works for you:

  • Meditation
  • Meeting with friends
  • yoga
  • deep breathing exercises
  • walking

6. Have a healthy diet

The old saying "you are what you eat", has a lot of truth in it, by making changes to our diet we can positively affect our skin health.

Limiting red meat, saturated fats, refined sugars, carbohydrates, and alcohol may help reduce flare-ups triggered by such foods.

Fish, seeds, nuts, and omega-3 fatty acids are known for their ability to reduce inflammation. This can be helpful for managing psoriasis symptoms.

Wheatgrass juice has high levels of chlorophyll which helps cleanse toxins from our gut to support and repair our skin health, leading to clearer, less congested skin. It is also high in antioxidants which fight free radicals to prevent damage and reduce oxidative stress on the skin.

Wheatgrass juice has shown the ability to boost the skin's immunity and inhibit the growth of bacteria, thereby promoting healing of skin irritation.

7. Drink water

Drinking  water helps keep you hydrated, and when you have psoriasis, being well hydrated will keep your skin from getting too dry. Your body is up to 60 percent water and you need to constantly replenish it. Ensuring that you are drinking plenty and keeping your skin moist are good ways to manage your symptoms.

8. Enjoy a massage

Massage involves the manipulation of superficial layers of muscle and connective tissue to enhance function, improve lymph circulation and promote relaxation.   Massage can be beneficial for those with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.
