Veganuary is here

In 2021 over half a million people joined in with Veganuary. Participants came from over 200 countries and 98% said that they would recommend it to a friend.

Veganuary was established to encourage people to consider a vegan lifestyle. Many people are adopting the lifestyle for a variety of reasons, be it health, animal welfare or environmental.

And so this month we thought we'd take a closer look at some of the questions often raised when thinking of becoming vegan.

Can you get enough protein being vegan?

The simple answer to this is yes.

Plant foods can provide all the essential amino acids that are the building blocks for protein that cannot be made by your body.

Make sure that your meals contain good sources of protein, such as:

  • Beans
  • Lentils
  • Chickpeas
  • Tofu
  • Soya
  • Alternatives to milk and yoghurt,
  • And nuts.

Which of the following food groups would you think contained the most protein?

1 cup of Tofu or 2 eggs?

1 cup of soya beans or a 4oz steak

1 cup of lentils or half a chicken breast?

Do vegans get enough nutrients and vitamins?

Anyone with a limited diet can lack essential vitamins and nutrients. People who follow a vegan lifestyle need to ensure that they eat enough of the right types of foods to get adequate nutrition.

Vegans need to be careful to get enough:

  • Calcium
  • Iron
  • And vitamin B12.

Soybeans, peas, beans, and lentils are all high in calcium. For example, one cup of edamame offers 26% of the daily RDA of calcium.

Good sources of iron include lentils, chickpeas, beans, tofu, chia seeds, ground linseed, hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds, kale, dried apricots, dried figs, raisins, quinoa and fortified breakfast cereal.

Wheatgrass juice contains high levels of Vitamin B12 with 100ml containing 1600% of the RDA.

Aren't we designed to eat meat?

It's only recently that meat has been such a large part of our diet. Before mass farming meat was relatively rare.

If we look even further back it's now thought that the gladiators were also mainly plant-based and indeed our closest relatives the primates are mainly vegetarian.

Humans have evolved to be omnivorous, eating both animals and plants for survival. Our bodies are capable of digesting both plant and meat sources.

However, this doesn't mean that we must eat meat. A plant-based diet can provide all the vitamins and nutrients needed for a healthy and happy life.

To conclude, it's simply a matter of choice. A vegan diet can provide all of the essential vitamins and nutrients needed. So, will you try Veganuary this month?
